Folklórico Bodysuit Folklórico Bodysuit

Gold made us black, greed made us white, but we are red, white and blue. Common colors that became symbolic of and uncommon heritage. We are red, white and blue… it comes in waves, it spins, and it soars. You can hold a piece of it between your fingers. White cotton, heavy with red and blue ruffles. White cotton drenched in rhythm. Twirling skirts. Dancing, Merengue Folklórico.

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Our Price: $28.00
Quisqueya Bodysuit Quisqueya Bodysuit

Words don’t do heritage justice. But songs do. When you are torn between languages, and islands sometimes all you have are songs. They soothe your fears, rhythmically. They make you realize that there was a time, before you, when your future was decided. In a plot twist your grandmother accepted that coffee would never rain from the sky, so she left the mountains, the valley and the dirt that held your ancestors for a promise of more.

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Borinquen Bodysuit Borinquen Bodysuit

Between statuses there lies a land, vibrant, full, loud and firm. Within its green are traces of red, and the end of a rainbow where you find Taino hieroglyphics including a coqui. Along each color there are traces of a past that aches to be forgotten, but must be used to build a future. La finca, el negro, un puerto, una bandera. All pieces of a collage, held by the promise that we'll rise again and our status won't be complicated.>

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Ciboney Bodysuit Ciboney Bodysuit

Rumor has it that she came from Spain, maybe Portugal? She supposedly traveled to Cuba. Then headed to the Dominican Republic, alone? in the 1800’s. Somewhere she found a partner, a “local” man.

They, my ancestors are where the story of us ends. Or maybe begins. See, when I imagine her, in Cuba I know I am just like her. Willing to explore. To seek. To be. I know it because the first time I heard the word Cuba I felt a tug. The same one she did. Can you believe I haven’t visited yet?

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

El Tiburon Bodysuit El Tiburon Bodysuit

The year is 1995. R&B is everything! A soundtrack to simpler times. And if we were going to get up at dawn to clean on Saturday, we were going to blast Shaggy to get through it. Then Proyecto Uno released El Tiburon. In those five minutes we realized there was a place were merengue and hip-hop could coexist. And suddenly, you, your mom, and a broom finally clicked.

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Chacabana Bodysuit Chacabana Bodysuit

Viejo, mi querido Viejo. Who doesn’t love that song? My heart made a collage for it, featuring my grandfathers. Papiro, el moreno with a belly that was perfect for bouncing, napping or running into. He made me question Santa’s ethnicity. Elvido was the opposite. He carried his strength frailly. He raised too many kids, fed them with soil, and nurtured them in streams. But they weren’t that different, they both donned Chacabanas that dripped swagger.

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Diosa Luna Diosa Luna

The moon holds a special space in mothering. She has always watched our babies in moments we can’t. We like to imagine that for our ancestors she was a symbol of motherhood, light and dark. Today we honor her for always being there.

Diosa Luna is the Taíno goddess representative of the always inspiring moon. She watches over us while we sleep. She is softer than the sun. But has twice its gravitational pull. She inspires songs. She shines a light on love. She was the first element we picked for our logo. She is everything we want to communicate through our designs.

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Morir Soñando Baby Bodysuit Morir Soñando Baby Bodysuit

Orange juice, milk, sugar and ice. I would watch mom mix these ingredients like a magician. The glass created a moment, just for us. In that moment my Dominicaness, and Americanism blended. All that remained was smooth, sweet, calm… and love.

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

El Bebe El Bebe

Baby. Swaddle. Fertility. Sacred. Taínos did not have a written language, but they left us markings that explain their lives and beliefs. The existence of petroglyphs such as this allows us to make assumptions about their priorities. The swaddled baby symbol “shows different body types of the so called “swaddled/wrapped” theory.

Today we continue to swaddle babies providing them a sense of safety, and being held. We don’t know when swaddling began, but these ancient symbols are deeply rooted in a sense of sacredness, the unknowable mysteries of creation and the ever changing patterns of natural energies”*

We chose to include the swaddled baby in our logo because we honor indigenous maternal knowledge. We also think these symbols are adorable. But aren’t all babies? Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Agua Agua

To island peoples water is a respected resource. It connects, shapes and destroys at will. It’s strength is not challenged. For centuries indigenous peoples have honored it. Taínos were no different. Carvings depicting water can still be seen in caves.

At Ojala Threads we honor all water sources by making manufacturing choices that do less harm. Our inks are water based, making them a better choice for babies. We chose white bodysuits to avoid toxic dying practices that harm those surrounding manufacturing plants.

Our Bodysuits are made of a fuller cotton and spandex blend. The blend ensures a fit that responds to a baby’s shape without limiting movement or feeling rough against the skin. Our final blend is something we would want to be draped in, we know your baby will agree.

Portavasos Portavasos

Even while resting we should honor our roots. Do just that with our custom coasters created in the Dominican Republic by a locla artisan.

This set of custom coasters features the images which make up our logo. The baby, water, moon goddess and palm. We chose these symbols as a testament to our unifying Taino heritage.

The images are burned on upcycled mahogany. Mohogany is the national tree of the Dominican Republic and is indigenous to the Americas. This is a pre- order item. It will be created when ordered and then shipped from the Dominican Republic.

Our Price: $40.00
